Marks Percentage Calculator — Free Marks to Percent

Marks obtained ÷ total marks × 100.

Last updated: August 2026

Quick reference

What this calculator does
Convert marks obtained and total marks into a percentage and letter grade.
How it works
Enter marks obtained and total marks — the calculator divides, multiplies by 100, and maps to a US letter grade.
Example
425 out of 500 → 85.00% (B).
When to use it
When your exam report shows raw marks rather than a percentage, common in board exams and worksheets.

85.00% (B)

Guide

Introduction

Board exams, semester reports, and many international school systems list results as marks obtained out of total marks — not as a ready-made percentage. Converting 425 out of 500 sounds easy until you are juggling four subjects, a scholarship deadline, and a phone calculator that drops decimal places.

Certoflow's Marks Percentage Calculator divides marks obtained by total marks, multiplies by 100, and maps the result to a letter grade on the standard US scale. Enter two numbers and read the percentage to two decimal places. The tool runs entirely in your browser: no account, no uploads, and no data stored on a server.

For short classroom quizzes scored as points out of a small total, the Test Score Calculator uses the same math with student-focused labeling. For general percent problems unrelated to grading, try the Percentage Calculator.

What this tool does

The calculator presents two numeric fields and a formatted result:

FeatureBehavior
Marks obtainedPoints or marks you earned (0 or higher)
Total marksMaximum marks for the assessment (minimum 1)
PercentageObtained ÷ total × 100, shown to two decimals
Letter gradeStandard A–F mapping in parentheses

The default example shows 425/500 so you can preview the interface. Results update instantly as you edit either field. The tool does not read PDF mark sheets or import from school portals — you enter values manually from your report card or answer key.

How it works

Certoflow calculates the marks ratio:

Percentage = (marks obtained ÷ total marks) × 100

Letter grades derive from the percentage using Certoflow's shared US scale (A+ at 97%, A at 93%, B+ at 87%, and so on down to F below 60%). The same thresholds appear in the Grading Scale Chart and other education tools.

All computation runs client-side in JavaScript. Invalid totals (zero or negative) return 0% to prevent division errors.

Worked example

FieldValue
Marks obtained425
Total marks500
Percentage = (425 ÷ 500) × 100
Percentage = 0.85 × 100
Percentage = 85.00% → B

A student with 462 out of 500 sees 92.40% (A−). A student with 310 out of 400 sees 77.50% (C+).

Real-world examples

Board exam result day

A student receives 387/500 in mathematics. The calculator shows 77.40% (C+), helping them compare performance across subjects that use different total marks.

Worksheet with fractional credit

A science worksheet totals 47.5 marks after partial-credit questions. Entering 41.5 obtained and 47.5 total yields 87.37% (B+), accounting for half-point rubric awards.

Comparing term tests

History scored 88/100 and geography scored 176/200. Converting both to percentages (88.00% and 88.00%) confirms equal performance despite different denominators.

Homeschool transcript preparation

A parent records unit tests as marks and needs consistent percentages for a portfolio. Running each test through the calculator produces uniform two-decimal results for record-keeping.

Scholarship minimum thresholds

A program requires 75% in core subjects. A student with 358/480 (74.58%) sees they are slightly below the line and can identify how many marks a regrade might recover.

Common mistakes

Swapping obtained and total. Entering 500 in marks obtained and 425 in total marks produces a nonsense percentage above 100%. Obtained should always be less than or equal to total.

Using the wrong denominator. If the exam was out of 80 but the report template says 100, verify the actual total before converting.

Ignoring section weighting. This tool handles one marks ratio. Combining multiple sections with different weights requires the Grade Calculator or Points Grade Calculator.

Rounding too early. Calculate the full ratio first. Rounding obtained marks before division can shift the final percentage by a tenth of a point near grade boundaries.

Assuming letter grades match your institution. Certoflow uses a common US scale. International schools may use different cutoffs — check your handbook.

Use cases

Report card interpretation — Convert raw marks to percentages when the school only prints fractions.

Cross-subject comparison — Normalize tests with different totals (50, 80, 100, 500) to a common scale.

Regrade requests — Show exact percentage impact of additional marks before emailing an instructor.

Parent-teacher conferences — Arrive with calculated percentages instead of estimating from memory.

Portfolio and transcript prep — Produce consistent percentage records for homeschool or transfer applications.

FAQ

Can I use decimal marks?

Yes. Partial credit often produces values like 37.5 obtained out of 50 total.

How is this different from the test score calculator?

The math is identical. The marks percentage calculator uses terminology common in board exams and international reports (marks obtained, total marks). The Test Score Calculator labels fields as points earned and points possible for classroom quizzes.

Does this handle weighted subjects?

No. It converts a single marks ratio. For weighted course categories, use the Grade Calculator.

What precision does the percentage use?

Two decimal places (for example, 85.37%). Letter grades use the full calculated value before display rounding.

Can obtained marks exceed total marks?

If bonus marks push obtained above the original total, enter the adjusted maximum in total marks. Otherwise the percentage may exceed 100%.

Are my marks sent to Certoflow?

No. All data stays in your browser. There is no sign-up and no server-side storage.

Can I use this offline?

After the page loads once, calculations work offline because logic runs entirely client-side.

Frequently Asked Questions
