College semester GPA from courses.
Last updated: August 2026
Quick reference
- What this calculator does
- Compute college semester GPA from course letter grades and credit hours on the standard 4.0 scale.
- How it works
- Add courses with letter grades and credits — the calculator multiplies grade points by credits and divides by total credits for semester GPA.
- Example
- A in 4-credit Calculus, B+ in 3-credit English, A− in 3-credit Psych → semester GPA 3.70.
- When to use it
- When you need a single-term GPA from your course list, separate from your cumulative transcript average.
Your GPA
3.65
Guide
Introduction
College course loads mix credit hours freely: a four-credit lab beside two three-credit lectures and a one-credit seminar. Your semester GPA is not a simple average of letters — each course's grade points multiply by its credits before dividing by the total. After finals, you want that semester number before the registrar updates your portal, or before you answer a parent's question about Dean's List standing.
Certoflow's College GPA Calculator computes semester GPA from course letter grades and credit hours on the standard US 4.0 scale. Add as many courses as you need, set grades from the dropdown, and read the GPA to two decimal places. The tool uses the same GpaCalculator component as the general GPA Calculator but is positioned for undergraduate semester planning. Everything runs in your browser with no sign-up.
To merge this semester into your existing transcript GPA, use the Cumulative GPA Calculator. For high school honors and AP weighting on a 5.0 scale, try the High School GPA Calculator.
What this tool does
The calculator presents a dynamic list of courses. For each course you set:
| Field | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Grade | Letter grade from A+ through F |
| Credits | Credit hours for that course (decimal steps supported) |
You can Add Course for additional rows or Remove a course when more than one exists. The displayed GPA updates automatically as you edit any field.
The result is the weighted average for the courses currently listed — typically one semester's schedule unless you intentionally combine terms.
How it works
GPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points:
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)
Certoflow uses this grade-point mapping:
| Letter grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 |
| A− | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B− | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C− | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| D− | 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 |
All computation runs client-side in JavaScript. If total credits is zero, GPA displays as 0.00.
Worked example
| Course | Grade | Credits | Points × Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus I | A | 4 | 4.0 × 4 = 16.0 |
| English Comp | B+ | 3 | 3.3 × 3 = 9.9 |
| Psychology | A− | 3 | 3.7 × 3 = 11.1 |
| Totals | 10 | 37.0 |
GPA = 37.0 ÷ 10 = 3.70
Real-world examples
Fall semester check-in
A freshman enters five courses from the portal: mostly 3 credits, one 4-credit lab. Semester GPA 3.42 confirms they are above the 3.0 scholarship renewal threshold.
Dean's List eligibility
A university requires semester GPA ≥ 3.50 on 12+ credits. A student enters six three-credit courses and sees 3.55 — qualifying before official posting.
"What if I get a B in biology?"
Changing Biology from A to B drops semester GPA from 3.68 to 3.55. Scenario planning without re-entering the whole schedule on the registrar's portal.
Quarter-system conversion
A student on quarters enters four courses: 4, 4, 3, and 3 credits. The calculator handles unequal weights without treating each course equally.
Academic probation boundary
On probation requiring semester GPA ≥ 2.0, a student models in-progress courses with projected grades. A projected C− in one class still keeps the semester above 2.0.
Common mistakes
Mixing semesters unintentionally. Listing fall and spring together gives a combined GPA for both — correct only if that is what you want. For single-term GPA, enter one semester at a time.
Wrong credit hours. A 4-credit lab counted as 3 credits inflates GPA. Match the transcript exactly, including 1-credit seminars.
Including pass/fail courses. P/F courses often do not affect GPA and should be omitted unless your institution assigns point values.
Expecting honors weighting. College courses on a standard 4.0 scale do not add AP-style bonuses. Use the High School GPA Calculator for weighted high school GPA.
Comparing to cumulative GPA. This tool outputs semester GPA for the courses entered. Your cumulative average across all terms requires the Cumulative GPA Calculator.
Use cases
Semester performance review — Calculate term GPA immediately after grades post.
Scholarship maintenance — Verify semester GPA against renewal requirements.
Dean's List tracking — Confirm you meet the term threshold before the official list publishes.
Athletic eligibility — NCAA and NAIA rules often reference semester GPA; quick checks help advisors and students.
Registration planning — Model how one weak grade affects term GPA before choosing pass/fail options.
FAQ
Is this weighted for honors?
No. This uses the standard 4.0 college scale without high school-style honors or AP bonuses. For weighted high school GPA, use the High School GPA Calculator.
How do I update cumulative GPA?
Enter your prior cumulative GPA and completed credits in the Cumulative GPA Calculator along with this semester's courses.
Can I add more than four courses?
Yes. Click Add Course for as many rows as you need. Full-time loads of five or six courses and part-time schedules both work.
Does this differ from the general GPA calculator?
The underlying component and math are the same. This page is titled and described for college semester use. The GPA Calculator covers the same functionality with broader wording.
What GPA do I need to reach a cumulative target?
Use the Raise GPA Calculator to find the average required on remaining credits.
Are my grades sent to Certoflow?
No. All data stays in your browser. There is no sign-up and no server-side storage.
Can I use this offline?
After the page loads once, calculations work offline because logic runs entirely client-side.
